Hello,
Coming Together Around Data: A PI Meeting for Datanet/INTEROP, now passed, was a highly successful event gauged by the level of participant interaction and engagement. One can see how the meeting unfolded and objectives emerged by taking a look at these overview slides
and you can find individual presentations linked next to the presenters name in the agenda below. The 2 page whitepaper resulting from the workshop is below; we heartily welcome your comments.

Objectives
NSF PI Meetings have long provided an opportunity for project teams to exchange information with one another. The 2012 DataNet/INTEROP PI meeting, goes a step beyond by making the meeting a forum where common challenges can be discussed and frameworks considered for the long term resolution of common issues.
The objectives of the workshop will be achieved through a program that draws on notions from the "unconference". The goal of the unconference is to foster emergent ideas or efforts. It can be assumed that data, and for most that means data in the context of informatics or e-Science, scientific data sharing, preservation and interoperability is important to attendees. The unconference, adapted to the project meeting setting, is intended to accomplish the goal of free-form discussion and attainment of objectives.
| Meeting Objectives | Objectives Achieved By |
| Inform attendees of international advances. | Invited Talks of General Interest |
| Facilitate learning, leveraging, sharing across projects. | Short project talks. |
| Common ground challenges or opportunities | Birds of a Feather Sessions (BoFs) - Participant Driven Groups of Members Interested in a Particular Issue |
| Information Sharing | Information Sharing Reception |
Agenda
The agenda is below. Please use this area to make suggestions about Birds of a Feather topics or just general suggestions about the flow of the meeting.
An important component of the meeting is a 2-hour poster session and reception held the evening before the meeting begins. The purpose of the poster session/reception is to allow attendees to familiarize themselves with the projects represented at the meeting. PI's are welcome to have a laptop at the table by their poster to demonstrate the technology used within their DataNet or INTEROP.
The agenda has now been set with the Conference Center, but please Login and click edit to add Birds of a Feather (BoF) suggestions:
- I suggest moving the lightning talks to the beginning of the day on Thursday so we have a chance to learn about projects earlier in the meeting. We may not all be able to make it around to every poster/demo the night before as we will be manning our own posters/demos. DONE!
- An opportunity to demonstrate project infrastructure and interoperability between DataNet Partner solutions would be helpful. POSTER SESSION IS TIME TO DO THIS, PLAN TO BRING YOUR LAPTOP
- Give us time to eat lunch so we can give our full attention to invited speakers AGREED, FIRST 1/2 HOUR WILL BE LUNCH ONLY
- NSF would like separate time with Datanet & Interop PI's HAVE A ROOM FOR THIS MEETING NOW (EACH MORNING)
- Need more time for BoF (45 minutes is barely time to get settled) EXTENDED TO 1 HOUR EACH
- NSF would like to have time to kick-start meeting WE WELCOME YOU ON THURS AM
- Suggest BoF after IETF lunch talks for extended Q&A.
- Suggested BOF Topics
- - Storage solutions and funding models for long term storage
- - DataCite, its use
- - IETF as model on which to continue momentum after workshop
- - Issues in using cloud storage for long term availability
- - Dataset discovery and data access services
- - Broadening participation

Subject:whitepaper followup: DataNet/INTEROP workshop
Date: February 23, 2012 9:32:31 PM EST
Hello,
I share the attached whitepaper written in followup to the DataNet/INTEROP workshop in Indianapolis, IN Jan 26-27, 2012. The goal of the whitepaper, as you recall, is to capture the workshop thinking about a standalone organization around scientific data and first steps to get common activity off the ground.

Subject: Data2012: unconference material; poster content; talk content
Date: January 11, 2012 7:03:41 PM EST
We're delighted you'll be attending the NSF DataNet/INTEROP workshop in Indianapolis 25-27 January 2012. You will be preceding the Super Bowl experience by a few short days, so the town will be lively. I'd like to draw your attention to the following 3 items that require your intellectual engagement prior to the workshop.
Seek BOF suggestions: As you know, the workshop will be run unconference style to allow topics to emerge from the participants. Specifically, we seek your input on BOF topics, and to get your thinking started, you may want to look at the attached Capability List* [[26]]. I explain the origins of the Capability List below, but summarize it by saying that it reflects the opinions of several hundred researchers who convened in person and remotely for NSF EarthCube in September 2011. As such, it is a synthesis document that merits your time and reflection.
Poster content: for those of you putting together a poster, the goal of the Wed evening poster session is to convey information about your project. You will also have 5 min on Thur to talk about your project, so both venues, should you choose, could allow you to double the information you convey to the other participants about the project. Posters have 4'x 8' of space each.
5 min talk: for those of you who are lead representative of a DataNet or INTEROP project, please plan to give a 5 minute talk about your project. Your time will be strictly monitored, so don't bother with preparing a longer talk.
- NSF GEO division and OCI office began in Summer 2011 the EarthCube (http://earthcube.ning.com/). The goal of EarthCube is to transform the conduct of research by supporting the development of community-guided cyberinfrastructure to integrate data and information for knowledge management across the Geosciences. NSF hosted a 3 day Charrette Fall 2011 to foster community engagement. The Charrette followed upon the submission of 111 whitepapers, and 185 requirement survey responses. During the highly facilitated 3 day event, attended by about 150 people in person and another 150 people remotely, attendees had multiple forums in which to express their views on needed capability. These capabilities were assembled into a list of 99 capabilities shortly after the Charrette, and since then NSF has condensed the capability list further to 14 key areas of capability needs. [[27]]
We welcome your thoughts on BoF topics. These topics you can send to me directly or post to the workshop wiki at http://cgi.cs.indiana.edu/~dsiweb/data2012/index.php/Main_Page

ListServ Instructions:
To send a message to all of the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to DATA2012-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU, which is called the list address. You must never try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed. All commands must be sent to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU, which is the LISTSERV address. It is important to understand the difference between the two.
You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF DATA2012-L" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU. You can also tell LISTSERV how you want it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. To send yourself a copy of your own messages, send a "SET DATA2012-L REPRO" command. Alternatively, to have LISTSERV send you a short acknowledgement instead of the entire message, send a "SET DATA2012-L ACK NOREPRO" command. Finally, you can turn off acknowledgements completely with the "SET DATA2012-L NOACK NOREPRO" command.
Note: Subscription settings and preferences can also be set using LISTSERV's Web Interface. For more information on using commands or on using the Web Interface to set your subscription settings, see the List Subscriber's Manual at http://www.lsoft.com/resources/manuals.asp.
Following instructions from the list owner, your subscription options have been set to "REPRO IETFHDR" rather than the usual LISTSERV defaults. For more information about subscription options, send a "QUERY DATA2012-L" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU.
Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived. You can access the list archives at https://listserv.indiana.edu/cgi-bin/wa-iub.exe?A0=DATA2012-L. You may need to log in or get a password for the Web interface to view the archives.
IMPORTANT: This list is confidential. You should not publicly mention its existence or forward copies of information you have obtained from it to third parties.
More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU.

Subject:Invitation to attend NSF DataNet/Interop Workshop
Date: December 1, 2011 7:07:16 PM EST
Hello,
It's my pleasure as organizer of the upcoming NSF PI project meeting for the DataNet and INTEROP projects to invite you to attend. The meeting will be organized as an open forum for identifying challenges, and creating synergies in data access and interoperability. One far-reaching outcome that Rob Pennington and Mimi Clure have suggested is a long-lived body with international connections around which issues of data access and interoperability research and education are addressed. Your advice in identifying specific topics and objectives will be sought in a separate message. For now, please note the below logistics details that require your attention.
Travel: Please plan to arrive in Indianapolis, Indiana (airport code IND) by 4:00 PM on January 25th so you have time to travel to the Conference Center, check into the hotel and freshen up before the evening's event. We expect to go until 1:00 PM on Friday the 27th, so please plan your flights out of Indianapolis after 3:00 PM.
Financial assistance is available from NSF for those who do not have the PI meeting in their budgets. Please contact Robert Ping to find out details should you require assistance.
Attendees: In addition to yourself (or a delegate) we invite a Co-PI and Project Manager listed on your award to attend.
Action items:
- Send Co-PI, Project Manager attendee names and email addresses from your project to Robert Ping by Dec 9th
- Book your travel to Indianapolis for Jan 25-27, 2012
- Contact Robert Ping for details about travel financial assistance if it is not covered by your NSF Award
- Watch for an email in the coming week regarding additional attendees, meeting topics and objectives

It's a 1.5 day meeting, and we're planning a Wed 25 Jan evening set-the-stage event for all. Details on number of attendees from your project to attend and travel support are forthcoming. For now, Robert and I just need you to block the date.

(1)NSF often has PI meetings for projects. It brings related projects together. These meetings and policy for attendance at them are usually set-forth by the National Science Foundation in the original call for proposals.
